Reluctant to leave her little den at the animal shelter – probably the first place she’s ever felt safe – Skylar wobbled as we put her down on the ground. Clearly uncomfortable standing, clearly uncomfortable sitting. Clearly worried about people too. She never looked straight at me, and mainly kept her head hanging down.
Skyler was rescued by TEARS, my local animal rescue organisation. She was found in one of Cape Town’s townships, being stoned by neighbourhood children. She has a severe case of mange and a secondary skin infection.
The good news is that she’ll probably be okay. She’s in the care of capable and loving people, who will do everything in their power to nurse her back to health and then find her a good home. So stay tuned for an ‘after’ shot in a few months time – hopefully one of a very fluffy and happy little pup.
